Historical ICD Code Lookup

The page allows a person to look up the ICD code or cause of death, for all versions of the ICD prior to the year of death. Results are shown from the newest applicable revision to the oldest.

  1. Enter the year of death or select from the drop down.
  2. Enter either the ICD Code OR the cause of death.For codes under 100, use the EXACT SEARCH CODE option.
  3. Select the search by option: ICD code or Cause of death.








Choose a year of death or “Before 1900,” then enter an ICD code or a cause of death. Only applicable ICD revisions will be loaded.

Results

Results are sorted from the oldest applicable revision to the newest applicable revision. Results are also filtered so no ICD revision after the selected year of death is shown. Search by ICD code when you have a number or letter code; search by cause of death when the death record uses a written cause such as consumption, apoplexy, or Bright’s disease. On narrow screens, scroll the results table sideways to see all columns.

Import your own data

Paste CSV with columns year, revision, code, reason, source, or paste JSON as an array of objects using the same field names. Imported data is kept in memory while this page is open. Revision 11 is included as a source link; the WHO ICD-11 browser is a dynamic application, so it may not bulk-load into this static table the same way the historical Wolfbane/Karolinska pages do.
